New Build

All new houses should now be designed and built so that they support sustainable living and can achieve zero energy operation. This is not the case in New Zealand as sustainable living is rarely considered and the majority of houses are being built to comply with the building code and no more. Until such time as all developers and builders start taking the lead in this area, it is the responsibility of the prospective home owner to ensure that the developer, architect, designer and builder are all working towards the creation of a sustainable zero energy home.

If sustainability is designed into the house from the outset, it need not add significantly to the build cost, but it will certainly reduce running costs, increase comfort levels and make the property much easier to sell on.

Home energy efficiency and sustainable living may not be of prime importance to everyone today, but they soon will be.
